Bogyoke Market hand carved wood.
The Bogyoke
Market in Yangon, one of the most
interesting Bazaar in Asia is treasure trove
for all kind of wood carvings. There are
iron wood carvings, sandalwood carvings,
teak wood carvings, rosewood carving, plus
jade carvings.
The items are
quite affordable and very decorative, only
sandalwood is quite expensive, there are no
teak wood furniture only smaller items such
as mirror frames and smaller sculptures, up
to around 70cm. In general they make almost
any size and shape when ordered.
There are a
couple of other markets and shops elsewhere
in Yangon offering the same and have bigger
items in the showroom but the diversity and
quality in the Bogyoke Aung San Market is
probably the best in the country.
The carved items
are of a very wide spectrum, there are
Buddha heads, Buddha images, dancers in
traditional costumes, mythological figures,
elephants and other animals plus other
decorative items such a great mirror frames.
Myanmar has a
long tradition in creating hand carved wood
arts and crafts. These special skills need a
lot of training and experience; this is
usually within a family where the skills are
passed from each generation to the next.
