made a study to pull up a ski
resort but gave it up because of
the political situation.
There is still some tropical rain
forests left but huge tracks of
land have been clear cut much
more as it is always indicated
from official sides. Another
real problem in the north is the
logging of Chinese people who
come over from the border and
cut / hit and run unfortunately
they do the same with other
stuff such as animals, plants
etc. to do this they simply buy
their way through although is
not allowed officially.
There is this some wildlife left
with animals, birds and even
tigers but poaching from Chinese
is a real danger in the north,
they even sell the coniferous
wood they cut in the valleys to
Korea and around. Also teak is
quite depleted, only fast
growing bamboo and other
materials such as rattan are
plenty. In the so called dry
zone means the very center with
places such as Bagan and the
area agriculture is done,
raising cotton, sesame, pulses,
and some rice with irrigation.
Trading in agriculture material
is in the grip of ethnic Indian
people who came in the country
with the English and some
before.

One of the most
important Burmese
resources is rice
which is grown in the
Irrawaddy Delta, among
other, since there is
enough water.
Theoretically a abundant
supplies of fish is
available but almost all
catches disappear into
Chinese who come in from
Thailand and Singapore
to buy.
I had a very negative
experience some years
ago when I had a look
around at the small
harbor in Myeik and
spotted a trawler
unloading lobsters, when
I asked the captain to
sell me one, there were
thousands of them
Singapore guy started
screaming pretending
this are “his” lobsters
this guy was so blocked
in his unspeakable greed
it’s real bad.
The captain still sold
me one and asked for one
dollar, imagine what
this Singapore guy paid
for the whole load and
each lobster will be
sold in Singapore for at
least US $ 10,-
wholesale. Actually I
gave it to the hotel
cook he made me dinner
from.
Another item from the
sea is mother-of-pearl
which is manufactured
into pretty items such
as boxes and other, they
are on display in the
Bogyoke market. Some of
the natives of the Myeik
Archipelago the Sea
Gypsies, also know under
the name Salone in
Myanmar and Moken in
Thailand are still pearl
diver although there is
a bigger operation with
cultured pearls, have a
look into the Bogyoke
Market in Yangon, there
are the end |
