Myanmar or Burma is the largest country in

Southeast Asia. Myanmar runs some 2090 km (1300 miles) north and south, from the lofty mountains of Tibet to the rolling tropical waters of the Indian ocean. Breadth wise, Myanmar draws out 925 km (575 miles) from the Naaf river on the Bangladesh border, to the Mekong river that separates Myanmar from Laos.

A horseshoe of hill-offshoots from the Tibetan Himalayas forms the strong natural frontier of Myanmar with Bangladesh and India in the west, with China in the north and northeast, and with Laos and Thailand in the east and southeast. Snow-capped Hkakaborazi (5885 meters or 19296 ft.), the highest peak in Myanmar and South East Asia, lies in Naungmong township, Kachin State, at the northern most tip of the country.

Just a few miles to the south of the tip, there is the famous  Diphu Pass, the strategic point where the three borders of China, India and Myanmar meet. Mountain streams from these slopes flow south to make the legendary twin-rivulets Meikha and Malikha, which later  conjoin (just above the Kachin capital Myitkyina) to form the famous river Ayeyarwady - Irrawaddy  in Myanmar - Burma.

Running mostly from north to south, three mountain systems in Myanmar cut through.

 - the Western or Rakhine Yoma, the Bago Yoma and the Shan Plateau - divide three parallel river valleys, the Ayeyarwady or Irrawaddy, the Sittaung and the Thanlwin.

The Ayeyarwady or Irrawaddy valley constitutes Myanmar proper.

Breaking News from Myanmar or Burma

A tropical storm -Cyclone Nargis-  with up to 220-km-per-hour gusts(120-mph) crashed into the Ayeyarwady or Irrawaddy delta area between Yangon / Rangoon and Bassein / Pathein and other places in Myanmar early Saturday May 3. , tearing off roofs, uprooting trees and knocking out the remaining electricity, actually in Yangon there is no electricity most of the time anyway.

The cyclones direction was into Bangladesh on Friday, but changed the path  into Myanmar instead.

In the Towns of Laputta, Kyaik Lat and many other in the Irrawaddy or Ayeyarwady -Delta 70% of buildings have been destroyed. Current figures are about 1 million homeless. Newest UN estimates are about 100.000 dead, the number are rising by the hour.

The great Ayeyarwaddy or Irrawaddy river flows down three different climatic region of Myanmar - Burma: the wooded Kachin heights in the temperate north, the dry belt that starts from the old capital Mandalay to the ancient Pyu capital Pyi (Prome), and lastly the vast flatness of the Ayeyarwaddy or Irrawaddy river delta.

These river valleys, with their tributaries and distributaries, all help to form the famous granaries of Myanmar, ancient
and modern.

At one time the paddy fields of Kyaukse and Minbu had fed old Bagan, Innwa (Ava), Shwebo and Mandalay
in old Myanmar - Burma. Nowadays, Bago / Pegu, Hinthada, Pathein and Myaungmya fields in the delta region are the top producers in Myanmar - Burma

The name ‘Myanmar’ was traditionally and officially used throughout history.

Hence the terms Myanmar Naing-Ngan (Kingdom of Myanmar or Union of Myanmar), Myanmar language, etc. But in speech, Bamar is a short form term; this led to misuse of the term Burma, Burman and Burmese during the British period. A great number of names were similarly misused such as Rangon, Prome, Pegu, Akyab, Pagan, Bassein, Mergui, etc. These have been changed on today’s Myanmar - Burma maps and publications. The land of Myanmar, in ancient days, was first known  by western travelers (who mostly came by ship) as Thuwunna Bumi, a Pali word meaning the Golden Land. Those travelers might have been appreciating Myanmar’s wealth in agriculture and minerals and the precious gold covered pagodas.

Myanmar - Burma is rich on precious stones and semi precious stones,

probably the best known are Myanmar ruby and  Myanmar Jade of the jadeit type. Actually this days if you see any jade anywhere it usually comes from Myanmar - Burma. There is also no Chinese Jade all "Chinese Jade is either imported legally or smuggled

into China from Myanmar. Since Myanmar rubies are getting more rare because the supply is decreasing it becomes harder to get any real good Myanmar Ruby and the prices are rising.

The problem behind is that all ruby mining is still done the traditional way , via "wash the ruby out" there is no investment capital available for larger scale mining. The best consumer source for Myanmar Ruby and Myanmar Jade is the Boyoke Aung San Market in Yangon - Rangoon or the shops along Silom Road in Bangkok, Thailand.

On certain places like Bagan, Mandalay, Yangon etc. it might be useful to hire a local photographer to assist you in finding the right places for photo - pictures at the right time.

Myanmar girl at Bagan
Myanmar girl at Bagan

The reason is very simple the local photographer know all the good photo shooting places, that includes naturally also video. They show you places to make your super photo you would never have found, especially when you don't have more than maybe a couple of days in a particular for doing your Myanmar photo.

The best choice around Bagan and Mt. Popa is Mr. Bagan Maung Maung, you can find him or one of his family member at the Ananda temple, they have a sales booth in one of the entrance of the temple, just ask, everyone know him, he is one of the most famous photographer in Myanmar - Burma and will also show you his rich collection of Myanmar photo he made over the years. Its really worth it, you will have a visual experience you never dreamed about. If you are on a longer photo - video trip you can hire a Myanmar photographer to come with you just like you hire the tourist guide, its worth it, doesn't cost lot of money and makes sure you will find the REAL places.

If you look for a photo guide in Yangon, Mr. Ko Oo is a excellent choice, you can reach him through the e-mail of this site, click contact. All other places have their own local photographer ask at the hotel or us. We also have a pool of writer available who can do a excellent text on almost any subject.
