Airlines, domestic and international
in Myanmar.
It looks like finally the
21.century came to Myanmar in
terms of airlines.
Air travel within Myanmar is still
done mainly with ATR turboprop
aircrafts from France. Yangon
Airways and the others on domestic
routes use them. Myanma Airways has
some old Fokker jets to be used on
the longer distance flights to
Sittwe and to the south of Myanmar
plus some ancient Fokker turboprops, Air Bagan
and MIA (Myanmar Airways
International) has
also 2 airbus 320. There are Myanmar
airlines domestic and Myanmar
Airlines International.
Yangon Myanmar is one of
Asia's most interesting flight
destinations served by several
airlines. The first things to
consider when travel to Myanmar is
your airfare, once you are in
Myanmar there are several Myanmar
airlines to choose to various
destinations in the country. Myanmar
is approximately the size of France
and England combined from the
glaciers of the Myanmar Himalayas to
the exotic Andaman Islands in the
south of the country. All
destinations are served by different
Myanmar Airlines such as Yangon Air,
Air Bagan, Myanma Airways and Air
Mandalay. They all use rather small
aircraft such as old Fokker jets and
turboprops plus ATR turboprops form
France.
You can save some money when
you go airline shopping once you are
at Yangon and want to travel beyond.
A easy approach is visit the Vegas
air travel agent in downtown Yangon
in the Central Hotel building and
opposite
Bogyoke Aung
San Market. They work
quite efficient and have reasonable
flight prices. In general consider
about $ 100,- for each flight in
average within Myanmar. For some
flights in Myanmar you need a
permission from |
|
the authorities which is
usually granted but takes around 2
weeks time since the handling
of this permissions is done at
the new capital at
Naypyidaw.
The Yangon travel agent will send
you to the tourist office near the
Sule Pagoda and they handle it, but
this flight restrictions are only
rather seldom, in general you can
travel in Myanmar wherever you want
but use a package tour from a good
local travel agent when you go for
exotic destinations such as Putao
and other places in the north and
north west of Myanmar.
Airlines in Myanmar serve the ever
growing demand for domestic and
international flight destinations
and are the backbone of Myanmar
tourism. For airlines schedules,
departure and arrivals go to the
website of the airlines indicated
above, there is no use to put
timetables here since flight times
are changing constantly. The best
airlines airfare you get when you
book your Myanmar airlines through a
local travel agent one is indicated
above.
At the new passenger terminal
at the Yangon International airport
the tube is even working now since a
while. Its only the second terminal
of this kind in Myanmar, the other
one is in Mandalay the tube wont
work there and there are continues
power break downs.
Most airline travel comes in from
Bangkok Airport,
Singapore
Airport or
Kuala Lumpur
Airport, but Chinese and
Indian Airlines are introducing
flights continuously. Thai international Airline
introduced a new flight between
Bangkok
Airport and
Yangon some time ago, leaving
Yangon
around lunchtime. Most airlines
operating in Myanmar try to increased the
prices |

between Bangkok and
Yangon
continuously,
especially
Thai International is
notorious, they
already charge
relatively high
prices anyway and
the in-flight
service is lousy
compared to the
price, actually the
Bangkok - Yangon run
is one of the moth
profitable for Thai
International and
the Passenger get the most lousy service in
return. TG is not a budget carrier they
charge full prices.
The going return
ticket Bangkok -
Yangon rate asked at
a travel agent in
Bangkok -around the
Myanmar Embassy,
Consulate -is baht
9000,- for Thai
International,
others ask about
Baht 7000,- .
Air Bagan asked for
Baht 5700,- with
a strange surcharge
on top of it, called Embargo Charge -no yoke-
read more further below. |
Some time ago Air Bagan fought a battle
against some English who try to have
this airbus declared as not suitable
to carry passengers since it was a
cargo aircraft before and was
refitted in
Shanghai China, actually it was
bought from a Chinese company. This
Brits do really everything what they
can to make the Myanmar's miserable,
as if they didn't do already enough
negative stuff in Myanmar during colonial
times which brought the country
finally into the current situation.
If you
want to make any flights out of Myanmar all
goes through Yangon, there are no
flights to lets say to
Phuket Airport Thailand or
Krabi Airport Thailand, only from
Mandalay
to
Chiang Mai there seems to be a flight
route, but it also wont work everyday, it
sometimes works, it sometimes doesn't.

Air Asia to
Yangon
Myanmar
is a good
choice now,
they have
and do just
the same as
all other
airlines but
their price
is lower,
that's the
name of the
budget
airlines
game, read

Some more about Airlines
serving Myanmar
domestic and international.
Air Asia is offering a return ticket for a little bit
more that
baht 4000,- including fees etc. (but be
aware that this is the official price on
their website), but when you go to the
counter and really want to buy the ticket,
-since it's very difficult to buy the ticket
at the website, the site doesn't function
properly-, they will try to charge you much
more, its somehow a scam to lure the
passenger to their
counter and after try the tricks.
Air Asia (Thai) fly
out of Bangkok very early in the morning,
not every day and have a bad record in terms
a delays. Actually the delay problem is
mainly with Thai Air Asia not with ones who
fly out of Kuala Lumpur Airport. |

Actually
Nok
Air of Thailand (not flying to Yangon) a
daughter of Thai International does exactly
the same tricks, both are Thai airlines,
just don't trust them they play games with
the customer.
Best flight deals to Myanmar
If you come
from elsewhere the best deal would
probably be to use Thai International
Airlines for the main routing and include
Yangon as a additional routing sector,
that means you get the Bangkok - Yangon
sector for a very low price integrated into
the basic ticket. But if you use Thai
International and buy a normal ticket
at a travel agent in Bangkok for Bangkok -
Yangon - Bangkok |
|
they ask for the
highest price of any airline
operating this route.
Myanmar airlines are
experiencing real boom time
currently ( Mai 2010), most flights
are full. getting more busy by
the day, new airlines, in particular
from China are opening new flights
to Myanmar and Yangon. The local
airlines are replacing old aircrafts
with new ones, now Myanmar Airways
International or MAI replaced their
old DC9 equipment with Airbus 310.

Flights to Myanmar
at Yangon Airport |
|
|
China
Southern Airlines has a flight air route
from Guangzhou to Yangon, regular flights
are offered three days a week -- Monday,
Wednesday and Saturday. bringing the total
number of air links between China and
Myanmar to three. Jetstar Airline has
flights between Yangon Airport and
Changi Airport
Singapore on a code sharing base with MIA or
Myanmar International Airlines
|
|
|
Becoming the third Chinese airline that
flies Yangon after Air China, Air China
serves Beijing-Kunming- Yangon, offerung
three flights a week on every Tuesday,
Thursday and Sunday.
China Eastern Airlines is flying
between Myanmar's Mandalay and China's
Yunnan provincial capital of Kunming at four
flights a week on every Wednesday, Thursday,
Friday and Sunday. |
Avoid Silk
Air, its a unpleasant encounter with
arrogant people.
The result is if you have a
connecting flight out of Singapore
with this airline nobody cares about
you, even when you go to Singapore
Airlines and ask for help, they just
tell we have nothing to do with Silk
Air - ! its the same company !- and Silk Air
has no office at the Singapore
airport, this is exactly the procedure
happen to me. Finally the Singapore Airline
staff told me I can sleep on the floor in
the transit hall if I like, does
that need any more comment ' So stay
away from this people they are a pain in the
a... !! - Also the food they serve in-flight |

Yangon Airport Check In Hall |
mostly looks like canned dog food, brrrrr its really
disgusting.
A other airline in domestic &
international market is Air Bagan,
they have the only rather not
so old real jet operating on domestic routes, (Myanma
Airways is the other who have a few "ancient" Fokker jets
operating), Air Bagan has the same parent company who is the
local agent for the Russian Aviaexport company, they are big
in trading to and own a few hotels, I cant do any comment on
them since I tried a few times to reach them and talk with
someone but there is no communication possible. |
|
Took Air Bagan the other day
from
Bangkok Airport to Yangon Airport. Both airports are
brand new and a excellent match to present
operations. Their flight is quite good, only the meals
are far below standard, but here they are not worst than
Thai International who also serves lousy food on this
sector, which is one of the most profitable for Thai
International, you can see how they value their customers,
and both have quite unqualified in flight staff. |

Yangon Airport Gate Lounge for Tube
Boarding |
I just wonder if it will go
ok with Air Bagan into the future since one of their Fokker
100 made a little crash at Putao some time ago by not
lifting off, probably because it was overloaded.
One of
their ATR's also had a little crash. They currently use
their airbuses on the Yangon - Incheon (Korea) sector and on
other sectors when there are enough passengers.
MIA - Myanmar International Airlines
abandoned their old MD 80
|
|
some time ago and is
using Airbus now.
The whole road transportation between
Thailand and Myanmar
is extremely
cumbersome, all cargo
must be reloaded at the
border. Means the Thai truck carries
the goods up to the Thai - Myanmar
border, there everything is loaded
onto a Myanmar truck to bring it to
Yangon, and this happen in the 21.
century, even in the 18. Century all
this was more easy. Truck
drivers have a hard time on this
route -from the Thai border to
Yangon- because there is a road
block every couple of kilometer and
the guys at the roadblocks milk them
like cows. All other is simply not
possible due to political reason and
there is no car insurance system in
the country which foreign cars could
buy in, there is some insurance for
a
Myanmar car
but not many buy it. |

Air travel
within Myanmar. The first choice is
Yangon Airways
or Yangon Air,
buy the tickets only through a agent -better price-, they
are reliable, depart more or less on time, are safe and very
customer oriented. There are others you might need to take
to exotic destinations within the country like Myanma
Airways, with them its difficult to get a ticket, they might
go or maybe not etc.
